In this blog, we will talk about the sweet spot of when to schedule your newborn photos in Phoenix with the hopes to eliminate any confusion or unknown! I am here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be as daunting as it may seem… let’s break it down together.

Imagine this: you’re pregnant and expecting a new baby. You have a to-do list a mile long and all the while you’re having trouble sleeping, breathing, and keeping up with your toddler. Unless you’re one of the lucky few and in that case, we need to know your secrets! You’re here because you know that you want memories of this fleeting season, but aren’t quite sure what steps to take. Maybe you had your maternity photos taken, maybe you didn’t. As you inch (literally & figuratively) closer to baby’s arrival, you’re starting to wonder if a newborn photoshoot is something you really want to add to your list.

What Is The Sweet Spot? 6-14 Days After Birth

This surprises most mommas! The ‘sweet spot’ for newborn photography happens between 6 to 14 days after birth. This seems quick? I understand! Here is why: in order to capture the true essence of your newborn, it is helpful that the photoshoot happen within the first two weeks of life. There are a few reasons for this…

During this two week period, the newborns are most cooperative so we are able to swaddle and adjust the placement of their hands, feet, head in a manner that showcases their tiny features. In these early days, your baby is sleepy and easily soothed with a feeding or swaddling. Around 3+ weeks, babies experience a growth spurt where they are more alert and can be more stubborn with their limbs (understandably so). Also worth noting, baby’s skin experiences some changes after 14 days like baby acne, peeling, and redness (so it’s best to capture babe before these changes occur!).

Why Early Booking During Pregnancy Matters?

Third trimester booking advantages for newborn photos in Phoenix

It is crucial to plan ahead for your newborn photoshoot. Waiting until the last minute, or even until after baby is born, leaves you with added stress that is not ideal during this fragile time for both mom and babe! This was one of the many reasons we have thoughtfully curated our newborn experience to prioritize peace, calm, and eliminating any rush from the process! The goal is to pamper mom and prepare the family for the photoshoot and this can be very challenging with any last minute bookings. The goal of having your newborn photos in Phoenix booked by your third trimester has it’s advantages:

  • Securing your dream photographer (my newborn calendar typically books several months in advance)
  • Gives us time to plan and prepare
    • We will schedule a Planning Appointment to discuss the details like wardrobe, in-home or studio, and artwork interest
  • Schedule hair and make-up
  • Prep the rest of the family

I can just hear your deep breath being able to check “Book Newborn Photographer” off of your to-do list and enjoy your final months of pregnancy. Once your session is booked and Planning Appointment scheduled, you can kickback and relax while we handle the details!

Due date flexibility planning

I think I might launch a petition to change “due date” to “guess date!” Did you know that only 4-5% of babies are born on their exact estimated due date? That said, we pencil in a tentative date for our session based on your expected due date. Knowing that every pregnancy and delivery is so unique, we will be in touch throughout those final weeks and connect shortly after baby is born (clients usually shoot me a “Yay he/she’s here!” text or email) and then we will either confirm or adjust our session date accordingly.

Factors That Influence Timing

C-section vs. natural birth considerations

Typically the method by which your baby is born does not affect our session date, with the exception of extreme cases like NICU visits and such. I approach those scenarios on a case-by-case basis. However, I do like to be thoughtful of mom’s recovery as we are shooting the session so it can be helpful for me to be aware of these details at the time of the session.

Baby’s sleep patterns and comfort

At 6-14 weeks old, baby does not yet have a pattern that largely influences the timing of our session. So, I will usually recommend a session time that is best for lighting and does not put too much pressure on preparation time like hair and make-up. This is typically at 10am and we will schedule out two hours for our time together. This will give us time to take some breaks and allow baby to sooth and nurse when desired.

“Older” Newborn Sessions

Now I realize we just spent the last few minutes talking about the importance of that 6-14 day window… and that still stands! However, I do want to make space for the cases where, for any number of reasons, the session gets scheduled out past the “sweet spot” window. Good news! That is totally ok. An “older” newborn session can be just as sweet, cuddly, connected, AND still feature the tiny details we all want to remember of our babies as they grow! I will use different swaddling techniques to accommodate for baby’s desire to be more independent and mobile. This is also a great opportunity to do an outdoor newborn sessions should the family want to and weather permitting!

Frequently Asked Questions About When To Book Your Newborn Photos

When is the best time to schedule a newborn photography session?

The ideal window is 6–14 days after birth. During this time, babies are sleepiest, most flexible for posing, and their skin is at its smoothest… making it the perfect opportunity to capture those tiny, fleeting details.

When should I book my newborn photographer during pregnancy?

We recommend booking during your third trimester. Newborn calendars fill up months in advance, and early booking gives us time to schedule your Planning Appointment, hair and makeup, and all the details so you can relax and enjoy the final stretch of pregnancy.

What if my baby is born past the 6–14 day sweet spot?

No need to worry! “Older” newborn sessions are still absolutely beautiful. Different swaddling techniques are used to accommodate a more alert baby, and outdoor sessions can even be an option depending on weather and preference.

Does a C-section affect when we can do the newborn session?

In most cases, no. The session date is based on baby’s arrival, not delivery method. Mom’s comfort and recovery are always taken into consideration, and any special circumstances are handled on a case-by-case basis.

What time of day is best for a newborn photography session?

Mid to late morning is typically ideal: around 10am. The natural light is optimal, the family is fresh, and it keeps everyone well away from the late-afternoon fussiness that babies and siblings are known for.
